Bio:

Freddy A. Pinto-Benel was born in Arequipa, Perú in 1990. He received his Telecommunication Engineer degree from the Universidad de Alcalá (UAH) in 2013, and his Master degree in Information Technology and Communications from the UAH in 2014. He is currently at the Department of Signal Theory and communications of the UAH, working towards his Ph.D. in the development of broadband/narrowband communications system over the power line network.

His current research interests include: digital signal processing, medium access techniques, multirate systems applied to broadband digital communications and power line communications.

About the lecture:

The popularity of power line communications (PLC) has grown a great deal since it can be a good solution for first-mile/last-mile connection to broadband services, in-home communications system (home area network), smart grid and smart energy applications, transportation platforms (vehicles) applications, among others.

As medium access technique for broadband PLC, the IEEE P1901 working group has promoted windowed OFDM and FBMC, referring to the latter as wavelet OFDM (or ELT-MCM). It is well known that one important drawback of OFDM is its insertion of redundancy, which reduces the throughput and the system capacity. As an alternative, FBMC is a viable and attractive solution because it does not require any kind of redundancy.

Therefore, the aim of this presentation is threefold. First, the understanding on the ELT-MCM for baseband high-speed communications is extended. Also, an efficient implementation of the ELT-MCM system, recommended by IEEE 1901, is proposed. Third, a system performance comparison between Windowed OFDM and ELT-MCM is carried out.
