Bio:
Dr Rafferty is a Senior Lecturer within the School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and director of the Advanced Visualisation Laboratory. She has over fifteen years experience working within the field of sensor fusion and light measurement using mobile devices and computer vision and over ten years experience working within the fields of computer graphics and virtual reality. To aid her research in this area she created a new low-cost immersive visualisation laboratory. Many of the algorithms and software applications used to create and run this laboratory are documented in her book on virtual reality.
About the lecture:
In this presentation, Karen will provide a brief introduction to Queen’s University Belfast before giving an overview of her research activities in the areas of airport lighting assessment, laparoscopic surgical simulation and multimodal sensing for the visually impaired. She will conclude with areas of future research that she sees as having real potential to impact society.
